Getting Started With Your Drive
Many companies, youth groups, and families get involved to have fun and help others. Ask people you know to participate and to spread the word about the great work Homeward Bound does in our community, and why YOU are involved. Homeward Bound moms are working hard to change their lives and to be self sufficient. They appreciate your helpful “hand up” as they create new successful lives!
When you decide to hold a drive or event benefiting Homeward Bound, we strongly encourage you to Tour the Homeward Bound Thunderbirds Family Village facility so you can see what your efforts will provide for families and children. Contact Becky Burghart at (602) 374-8710 or b.burghart@hbphx.org. Tours are held each Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 – 10:00am, 12:00 – 1:00pm or 3:00 – 4:00pm.
Follow us on Facebook! And, encourage others to do the same. You can also visit Homeward Bound’s website for more detailed information.
Tips & Ideas
Here are some tips that we have learned over the years to help you have a successful drive!
- Purchase and set up a Pac-N-Play in your lobby to collect donated items. It also helps if you "seed" it with some collected diapers and formula. When the drive is over, donate the NEW playpen or crib. It visually creates the opportunity for conversations about the drive and who it helps. Place posters or hang a banner (banners can be provided for events) about the drive. Set a goal of how many to collect for everyone to work toward. Communicate the purpose of the drive, and why you want to help!
- Set out receipts and flyers by the donation area for donors and anyone walking by. You can customize your own flyers by simply using these PDF templates.
- Tell donors that we need larger sized diapers… sizes 4, 5, 6 and pull-ups! Many Homeward Bound children experience delayed development that extends potty training to 3- and 4-years-of-age. Many of these children have experienced domestic violence, homelessness, and other traumatic situations during their short lives.
- Explain to donors that these collected items and cash donations are used for special and emergency situations. The drive fills the gap when unexpected events take funds out of budgets that are already stretched due to low wages. Homeward Bound case managers distribute and rely on the Baby Diaper Drive and Emergency Fund to help in these special circumstances.
- Designate the Baby Diaper Drive as the beneficiary of your group Holiday Event or Activity. Have people bring donations of diapers or cash.
- Take pictures and video clips and make them available to the student body. This creates a fun and involved drive. Also, send them to Eileen Rogers at erogers@allegraphx.com to be added to our Facebook Page and shared within the Diaper Drive community.
