Tips to Host a Successful Diaper Drive or Event

Many companies, schools, youth groups and families use this drive as a way to teach others about giving. Ask people you know to participate and to spread the word about the great work Homeward Bound does in our community and why YOU are involved. Ask your neighbors, church, customers, vendors, friends and family to help you this holiday season! The Homeward Bound families are working hard to change their lives and move towards self sufficiency. They appreciate your helpful hand up as they create new lives.

If you decide to hold a drive or event benefiting Homeward Bound we encourage you to tour the Homeward Bound Thunderbirds Family Village facility so you can see what your efforts will provide for families and children. For a tour, contact Becky Burghart at (602) 374-8710 or b.burghart@hbphx.org.

Easy as 1-2-3

Purchase and set up a pac-n-play in your lobby to collect donated items. It also helps if you "seed" it with some collected diapers and formula. When the drive is over, donate the NEW playpen or crib also. It visually creates the opportunity for conversations about the drive and why you have chosen to participate. Put up some posters or hang a banner about the drive. Set a goal for everyone to work towards. Communicate the purpose of the drive & why you want to help!

Set out receipts, donation envelopes and flyers by your area for donors and anyone walking by. You can customize your own flyers by simply linking to the Allegra Print & Imaging Online Print Center.  You can customize and print what you need on demand.

Take digital photos of your drive’s progress, your holiday event or of your team and lobby donation display. Send email updates to your team to let them know how you are progressing! Email a friend and let them know about the drive and how they can get involved. Email your photos to: susan@babydrive.org for possible use on the website.

Designate the Baby Diaper Drive as the beneficiary of your group holiday event or company activity. Have people bring donations of diapers or cash. You can customize flyers to send out with your holiday invitations. You can drop off your collected items at one of our drop off locations or Allegra Print & Imaging will pick them up after your event.

Emphasize collecting large size diapers, wipes, formula and other new baby items. The focus of the drive is on these items - not toys or clothing. There are other seasonal drives collecting these items. Due to liability issues, any baby furniture or items such as car seats must be new and still have the tags on them. We are not collecting any used items but will be sure to distribute them to other agencies if they happen to be dropped off.

What We Need

Tell donors that we need large sized diapers… sizes 4, 5, 6 and pull-ups! Many Homeward Bound children experience delayed development that extends potty training to 3 and 4 years of age. Many of these children have experienced domestic violence, homelessness and other traumatic situations during their short lives.

Baby Emergency Funds are Critical

Explain to donors and others helping with your drive that these items and cash donations are used for special and emergency situations. This drive fills the gap when unexpected events take funds out of budgets that are already stretched due to low wages. Homeward Bound case managers work closely with families and rely on the Baby Diaper Drive and Emergency Fund to help in these special circumstances.
