About Homeward Bound
Founded in 1990, Homeward Bound has been assisting homeless and domestic violence families with children as they transition from homelessness to economic independence. Beginning with one family and one home, Homeward Bound now owns and operates 155 housing units, which today serves over 539 individuals, 362 of which are children. We know that by providing a comprehensive social services program, which includes mental health counseling for children, we can significantly assist the children and their families as they begin to break the cycles of poverty, homelessness and domestic violence. Homeward Bound is not a short-term crisis center, as clients stay up to two years as they work toward self-sufficiency.
The program assists families with a "hand up, not a handout." Each family participating in the program must contribute 30% of their adjusted gross income for housing, utilities and support services. The comprehensive services provided to families include: case management; mental health services for kids and adults; childcare; medical and dental care; emergency household, food and clothing pantries; life skills programming such as budgeting, time management, self-esteem classes and much more. Homeward Bound also provides employment services including skill assessment, job placement, interviewing techniques, resume writing and GED classes.
To be eligible for the program a family must be homeless, fleeing a domestic violence situation and/or earning less than 50% of the area median income ($29,300 for a family of 4). They must be employed or seeking employment, have children under 18, free of drug and alcohol abuse and motivated to change patterns of behavior.
For those families completing the program, there is a 95% self-sufficiency success rate!
